An At-Home Test for Gum Disease

- Dr. Robert and Ruth Nara, 1989

The April, 1989 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association reports some rather shocking facts:  81% of all dentists have serious gum disease.  Recent research studies show that 92% of the public in general have the same gum disease (infection) problems.

The dentists' mouths were tested at a recent national dental meeting using a simple test which can be carried out by anyone, at home with very little expense.  Small wooden interdental cleaners (Stimudent Plaque Removers, Johnson & Johnson, Inc.) are inserted firmly between the teeth and allowed to stay there 15 seconds.  Upon removal, the absorbent wooden cleaner is checked for blood and/or pus... the presence of either indicates gum infection

The first ares to test are those where the teeth appear to be loose, or the gums receded or puffy looking.  All interdental spaces can be checked one at a time, using a new tip in each space.

Millions of Americans suffer from undetected gum problems.  The more scientific name of the disease is gingivitis, or more advanced stages - periodontitis.  The main cause is an infection of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, which results in inflammation, bleeding, pus formation and destruction of the connective tissue fibers which hold the gums to the teeth and underlying bone.  It's kind of a Velcro-like attachment which is destroyed by the acidic, toxic waste by-product of the bacteria.

The same American Dental Association Journal states that this method testing for gingival (gum tissue) health allows for efficient and accurate assessment over time, providing a record of diagnosis and treatment success  This approach then becomes the individual's best self-help method for the cure of gum disease.

This article also indicates that the use of the absorbent wooden cleaners is MORE ACCURATE than using conventional dental instruments!  Conclusions of the article indicate that this method of testing has an extremely high degree of accuracy,

The article from another recent dental publication reports that the total amount of the dentists' time spent treating gum disease is about 3%...  Is it any wonder that gum disease is experienced by almost everyone?

The answer to this dilemma is oral irrigation... at the neck of each tooth.  This is explained thoroughly in issue #9 of the People's Dental Association Network News, along with further details of the cause and effect.

Periodontal (gum) disease and systemic illnessesThe Connection Between Gum Disease and Heart Disease

Several theories exist to explain the link between periodontal (gum) disease
(receded, red, swollen, inflamed, or bleeding gums) and heart disease.

One theory is that oral bacteria can affect the heart when they enter the blood stream,
attaching to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries (heart blood vessels) and contributing
to clot formation.

Coronary artery disease is characterized by a thickening of the walls of the coronary arteries
due to the buildup of fatty proteins. Blood clots can obstruct normal blood flow, restricting the
amount of nutrients and oxygen required for the heart to function properly. Another possibility
is that the inflammation caused by periodontal disease increases plaque build up, which may
contribute to swelling of the arteries. Either may lead to heart attacks.

"Researchers have found that people with periodontal (gum) disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease
as those without periodontal disease."   More
