Questions and answers about gum disease, bad teeth and oral health
I receive an awful lot of questions about oral health from readers. It is very hard to give each the individual attention they may deserve so Ill begin posting these questions in the OraMedia Newsletter and will begin archiving them here at the OraMedia site.

Q:  "What is the OraMedia View on Fluoride?" -A.M.J.

A:  There are two sides to this coin. Yes, fluoride, in its different forms is toxic when ingested. On the other hand, fluoride, as a topical application, does aid in remineralization of tooth enamel by assisting calcium and phosphorus ions in building a stronger molecular bond. Science supports that.  Nara acknowledges both sides of this issue in his books but also questions the ethics of the mandatory introduction of fluoride into drinking water.  If I recall correctly, he says that the amounts ingested in drinking water are too low to be of any benefit to the teeth anyway.  Besides, in order to benefit, the water, while drinking, would have to be swished around, bathing the teeth with each drink, in order to be of any value.  This is rarely the case.  Besides, if it is true that we would benefit from ingesting fluoride, we are getting plenty of it in our every-day diets without adding it to drinking waters.  My opinion.

Economically, for a municipality to add fluoride to water, it is an extremely expensive process, with the addition of expensive equipment, cost of material and time spent doing it and testing.

OK, now to answer your question...  The OraMedia view is that if the teeth are kept clean and a proper diet and hygiene protocol is followed, why would we need fluoride in any sense?  For bad cases in need of repair, yes, it probably can be helpful in expediting the remineralization process, but I don't agree that we have to 'live' on the substance, any more that we live on antibiotics, for example.  You use an antibiotic when you're sick for a stretch of days.  It does its job and you stop taking it - but you don't take penicillin, for example, along with your daily dose of Vitamin C.
